Is there anyway to make a large size hard drive by putting together some standard SATA HDD of smaller size?
Question:
I like to have a large size storage drive. But the HDDs of 1TB are quite costly. If I can put together some far cheaper SATA/PATA Harddisks of smaller capacity in one place and then have some sort of system to identify them as one hard disk with one USB connection to my existing system, it would serve my purpose as well. Can anyone help?
Answer:
Use one hard drive for your OS and convert the others into a volume using disk management utility found in computer management console. To go into this, right click your my computer and click manage.
In the disk management utility, right click on one of the non-OS disks and select 'create volume'. Then in the create volume wizard select RAID-5 as your volume type.
With RAID-5, all your hard drives would be treated as one, plus on of your volumes is used to store redundancy information of the data stored in other volumes. Should your data ever go corrupt, you could use this redundancy info to reconstruct the data.
