ok is the WD raptor using sata 150 better then a caviar using sata 3.0Gb/s??? i understand that the raptor drive has a shorter seek time because it runs at 10,000rpm but the caviar has a faster transfer rate how do they really compare to each other if you were lets say installing a big file or just running basic programs
Answer:
A WD Raptop is faster. End of story... Even with the SATA 150...
What you have to understand is even though the Caviar is using SATA 3 gb/s connection it is nowhere near using all the bandwidth available on that connection.
Its like having a HUGE pipe and only running a trickle of water through it. As a matter of fact the Caviar couldn't fill up all the bandwidth on a SATA 150 connection... So why do you run a trickle of water down a HUGE pipe?
So in the future (when drives need a 3 gb/s connection) you can add faster drives without upgrading your hardware.
The WD Raptor at peak speed can transfer at 93.54 Mb/s which only takes up a fraction of the 150 Mb/s it has available to use. And the Raptor is faster than Caviar!
As many others have said the speed increase between the Raptor and Caviar is small but the price difference is huge. If you must have the small speed advantage then get the Raptor, but I'm sure you would be just as happy with a Caviar that has more storage and is cheaper.
