my maxtor onetouch lll is unavailable, it trys to start when pluged in but stops.?
Question:
the only place i come close to find this device, is in device manager in the universal serial bus controllers as usb mass storage device and when selected. it tells me this device cannot start (code 10). i have tried every thing, system restore, norton go back, virus scan in fact all norton fix it tools. help.

External drives are unfortunately notorious for these symptoms when failing. Your symptoms are indicative of two possibilities. 1) The USB to IDE interface inside the case has failed and 2) the drive itself has failed. If you need to recover data off of the drive you can fix #1 by disassembling the case and removing the drive, setting it as a slave, and hooking it up to your pc via the Ide Cable. Dissasembling the case will void your warranty. However, if your drive has failed (#2), then you will most likely need a data recovery company to pull the data off, and depending on the type of failure; you can expect to be quoted a price between $900-$2500.
If you are just looking for external drive functionality, you will need to buy a new drive.
