Hard drive running Windows NT4.0 (FAT) crashed, need advice!?
Question:
This is old school hardware and software here guys, but very important! (work emergency)
The hard drive runs the EZVision14c software that is integrated into a class 4 Laser used to etch tinted glass of sorts. The whole setup is obsolete since Cincinnati Automation no longer supports ANY of it.
The problem is that our product's system disks seem to have gone astray and now I have a very expensive pile of junk taking up space!
Since direct slaving this Quantum Fireball drive to IDE is producing massive lag and constant read errors I have it connected to a hard drive enclosure via usb. It still lags, but not as much. I still get copy errors as I am sure the drive is partially corrupted. But I NEED that software and would like to get this drive running again under winNT4.0.. Is this possible without original disks?
Yes, already contacted Cincinnati and asked for help.. thats how I found out its not supported.
P.S. Trying to avoid 20-50 thousand dollars to get new stuff.

Sounds to me like perhaps you could do with a software upgrade. They do have other versions of the EXVision (tm) software. As to accessing the drive, yes the cooling helps, don't know why but it does for as long as it is frozen. For starters NT4.0 does not use FAT, it only runs on NTFS so you need a system capable of reading this file allocation table format.
If the expense is as you say 20-50K I would stop messing with reading this drive. Send it off to a data recovery service that might charge you about 800.00 to transfer all the data to another drive. If the drive does its final crash, you will loose indexing for the plattens and then nobody can get the data out since you can't tell where it starts.
I've had customers go this route and ended up saving their systems.
