If my laptop computer has an IDE/PATA Internal Hard Drive, can it use a SATA external hard drive?

Addendum (made after 1st answer): When I upgrade the internal drive, it has to be another Ide Drive. So that makes me think that the computer cannot deal with a SATA drive, internal and maybe external too???
