What's the faster choice for a laptop hard drive: Internal Ide, or external USB2?
Question:
I want to get a new HD for my laptop. It takes IDE drives. I'm debating between whether I should get an internal drive or an external USB2. Both would be 5400rpm, 2 mb cache. Which option would be faster?
Things to consider - If I get an internal drive, it will just be the only one I have, all data will reside there. If I get the USB2, my current drive (40gb) will remain and I'll boot from that, but the majority of the software I use will be installed on the USB.
I don't care about anybody's opinion on whether USB2 is better because it's more convenient to be able to carry the drive around to another computer, or IDE sucks and I should get a laptop with a SATA drive, or anything else. Just FYI.

Internal IDE would be faster. Even USB2 can't compare with the access speed of an internal Ide Drive. Try copying a large file from a USB2 drive and time it. Then copy the same file on an IDE drive and compare the times. I think you will see the difference for yourself.
