My computer wont boot and I cant hear the hard drive.... ?
Question:
It beeps after a few seconds after hitting the on button IBM deskstar with windows XP ..... I am pretty sure the hard drive is shot..... what do you think?
ALSO: I am considering getting a new hard drive from the internet and I have come across a Hitachi ( i think is has to be being its an IBM) 400GB for $40 its is a Sata and I believe my computer is a IDE can i switch it to this? my computer currently has a 35 GB drive can it handle this big a drive? If you can't boot or even get to CMOS, then your hard drive is definitely blown out.
You will need a new one, but as long as you've got the XP install CDs and the activation key (usually on the computer as a sticker or if you bought XP it will be in the box)
No you cannot switch from IDE to SATA, because that would require a 64bit motherboard which you do not have. (Or just use an IDE/SATA adaptor)
I reccomend buying a 80 Gig IDE Hard Drive from a local used-computer parts store if you have one. That way you can get it cheap for about $5-15.
