How to Use Dual Monitors w/ Only 1 VGA port?
Question:
Hi folks! I have recently thought of getting dual monitors w/ a new desktop computer, but that desktop only has one VGA port on the backside of it. My question is, "how do I use both Monitors w/ only 1 VGA port?
Answer:
You can do this by getting a Matrox Dual Head To Go unit. That will plug into a USB port and the VGA port and make two identical monitors look like one double wide monitor to the system. These are not cheap and the displays have to be configured to the same resolution.
You could also get a USB to video adapter. Cheaper the the Dual Head To Go, but still not particularly cheap. It will allow different resolutions but you may have lag and artifact issues due to the bandwidth limitations of USB. Office type applications would be O.K. but games or video would be unwatchable.
However, for the same price you could buy a pretty decent dual head video card that is probably way better than what you have. Do ont get a single head card. It will probably disable any onboard graphics chips, or the drivers will fight over resources.
You can not do what you want to do without spending some $$. The best solution is to spend those $$ on a new video card. Decide how much video processing power you want against how much it is going to cost you and then get a dual head card, and that will support both monitors easily.
