I found when going through Kinematics in Milwaukee School Of Engineering that it was the most rewarding and exciting set of courses that I took.
I have used time and again the things I learned in Kinematics to solve problems that I professionally run into when designing mechanical systems.
I also have run into expensive kinematics programs that though fun to work with can really be like hitting a mosquito with a sledge hammer.
For most of us, getting a mega-kinematics program is not necessary. We are just trying to calculate some basic geometry and a good Kinematic method is all that is needed.
For those new to Kinematics, it is the science of motion. And in being the science of motion, mathematical relations are derived to describe the motion in exact details.
For example a slider crank (ie the relationship between a piston and a crankshaft during its cycle) can be modeled and described very accurately using basic mathematics. In fact if you have a spreadsheet you can layout all the data of the slider crank in tabular form.
This is very helpful when analyzing mechanisms that are "strange." IE fourbar links. The magnitude of forces in a 4 bar link system change dramatically with the position of the system. Having a good system to derive this relationship helps immensely. Instead of buying an expensive program to help you design this system, you can have a solution, or solutions in about 1 hour, complete with graphs and forces.
The system I am talking about is called the Eksergian method. It is based on a system that was developed in the early 1930s and 40s. It readily lends itself to either programs or spreadsheets.
The system uses Trigonometric functions to analyze mechanical motion. Instead of using difficult Laplace Transforms to derive mechanical systems, trigonometric identities are used instead. A relative understanding of Matrix Algrebra is required for advanced systems, but other than that the whole network of calculations is readily followed and sequenced.
