At last they're here. Official 128GB USB drives. With June's release of Kingston's DataTraveler 200 the next barrier has been taken. And the days of only forgeries are gone.
On the other hand, the days of high prices for small gadgets may be back. But latter is only understandable given the tremendous capacity. Let's face it, a 128GB Usb Drive can keep up with any regular hard disk but without the mechanical noise and motion. And on top of it it's handy and portable.
Besides, the DataTraveler 200 can boast with some nice specifications. It's built of a durable casing and can hide the USB connector with a slide. It has 20MB/s reading speed and 10MB/s for writing, which is definitely a decent start for this new capacity. Included are also password security and compatibility for Vista's ReadyBoost.
The next 128GB USB drive in line is Edge Tech's DiskGO. Slated for a July 31 release, this one features a traditional cap design. Hence it's a bit longer than the Kingston, but the width and height is shorter. The DiskGO offers password protection and 128-bit AES encryption. There's no details known yet about the transfer rate but one can assume that it will be in the same vicinity as the DataTraveler 200.
As a side note, the DiskGo as well as the DT200 are also available in 32GB and 64GB. That way one can go for two or three drives in order to save money and still reach the overall capacity. That is if you don't mind being considered a cheater.
Again, the actual good news here is that with the first real 128GB USB drive out on the market, it will be harder for fakers now to prey on the impatient. "Look at our amazing capacity!" won't fly anymore. But they may still be able to win over the uninformed as they can now change their tactics to "See, no big deal - this is just the latest model".
So make sure whatever Flash Drive is offered to you that it matches the official releases by Kingston, Edge Tech and whoever is to follow. It's best to keep track of this on the internet. As a heads-up, I can tell you that Samsung has announced a 128GB USB drive too.
Of course it's possible that now we will see fake 256GB drives or even 512GB. But let me suggest that for now, we find satisfaction in the 128GB portability. Surely there isn't much left to be desired when you can carry 28 DVDs in your pocket and still have room. That's room in the pocket as well as the drive itself.
