Fix "Master Boot Record" on laptop HDD? S/w fix booting from CD?
Question:
Hi,
I'm trying to completely reformat my hard drive. It's on a laptop without a floppy drive. My brother installed a dual boot using GRUB (ubuntu & XP). (But he's not around and I don't know what I'm doing!!)
And after MUCH fiddling around, I now have a virtually unusable laptop. (Sorry - too many steps to remember!!)
So at the moment, the situation is when I put in the XP bootable disk (SP2) and either press R for repair or Enter to install XP, I get the following message:
"setup did not find any hard disk drives installed"
And when I let the PC boot up, GRUB gives error 22.
What software can I boot from CD to fix this? PartedMagic boots up fine from CD but I don't think it has an option for fixing the master boot record.
What can I do allow XP bootable CD to recognise the HDD?

Answer:
Looks like you need to replace your HDD. Computers and laptops in general can be complex and if you don't know what you're doing then you can mess up even the simplest of fixes. You should be able to get either a brand new HDD or a second hand one from eBay. That would probably be your cheapest option rather than taking it to a computer repair shop and have them charge you stupid prices. Good luck with whatever you do mate.
